Erik Jones Leads Team Toyota in Southern 500 at Darlington

“We started deep, 30th, today and drove up and finished fourth. We got a couple of extra spots at the end, but this Sport Clips Camry was quick,” Jones said. “We just never got up front. We just need to get up front and get some clean air. That’s what we did last year. I thought we had just as good of a car as what we did last year. We just never got to the lead. That’s what held us back, I think. It’s tough. The cars are finicky. They are on edge, and it’s really hard to make ground, but decent day.”

Fellow Joe Gibbs Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. dominated the night by winning the first two stages. Truex reeled in leader Chase Elliott in the closing laps but sent his Toyota Camry into the corner to take the lead and made contact with Elliott, which led to a cut tire in the closing laps. Truex finished 22nd.

Kyle Busch finished seventh, Denny Hamlin 13th, Suárez 25th and Christopher Bell 34th.

The NASCAR Playoffs head up I95 to Richmond Raceway for Saturday night fun on September 12th. Coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. ET, can be seen on NBCSN and heard on MRN Radio as well as SiriusXM NASCAR Radio
